I like listening to classical. It helps me stay relaxed in the face of frustration, and I like the contrast of manly tool-turning and sophisticated musicality.

Thanks to a couple guys from my FSAE team, wrenching feels not quite right unless there’s some Danko Jones playing.

Although I’ve been known to listen to the soothing sounds of the Real McKenzies:

Or some good old Ramones, Clash, Doors, Trogs... The good stuff. Maybe some April Wine, Trooper, or Tragically Hip if I’m in a calmer mood. Or if I need to calm down, Wardruna does the trick.

Nothing hard core or fast paced. That would make one more angry when they fuck up or possibly through off a rhythm.

We actively sought out business students, but really anyone worth a damn (I.e willing to participate and help out and not just only show up if they could drive) could join. Hell, we had a vet-med student on the team.

Jazz. Because I have near zero patience and a short temper. Working on cars can be frustrating enough without some kind of aggressive music egging me on.

We were mostly trying to get business and/or marketing students because part of the competition is doing a business model for the car you’re building. Once you get there and down to the nitty-gritty of competition, it’s less about how fast your car is and more about how well you designed it and how well you can market it. A huge amount of points go into cost reports and things like that. It’s incredibly useful to have people who know what they’re doing for those aspects, and also for team administration needs.

We were also a much smaller team, so to be fair we were looking for all the help we can get, and creating a learning experience for people who want to grow and learn. From talking to other teams, some seem to act like elite clubs where you can’t get in unless you already know what you’re doing. I can understand with larger campuses not wanting hundreds of people milling around getting in the way of everything, but at the same time if you become an elite club sneering on the rest of the world, what are you really gaining from it?
